Navigating Advanced Coursework: AP and Dual Credit Options

Apr 9, 2025 | NorthStar Academy | 0 comments

Dr. Seana Sundermeyer shares her expertise about Advanced Placement and dual credit courses, explaining the differences between these options and offering guidance on how students can choose the right path for their academic journey.

• AP courses align with College Board standards and prepare students for both the AP exam and university-level work
• Dual credit courses are approved by Colorado Christian University and allow students to earn college credits while in high school
• Students should consider limiting themselves to one or two advanced courses at a time due to the increased rigor and time commitment
• Important to research which credits will transfer to prospective universities before choosing courses
• AP exam preparation should include completing the full course, utilizing practice exams, and maintaining personal well-being
• The community of teachers and staff are available to support students pursuing academic excellence

Dr. Seana Sundermeyer

My family and I live in Gambrills, Maryland.  My husband is an active duty Chaplain for the US Navy, serving one of the naval communities here in the greater DC-area. We are enjoying living in such a historical place to explore.

I have two children—well, three now by marriage! My daughter Kaitlyn, and her husband Trent, live in Nampa, Idaho, where she is a Middle School art teacher for the school district. Trent is a computer analyst for the university there as well. My son Tyler is a freshman at Olivet Nazarene University, just south of Chicago, pursuing a degree in History and a minor in Music/Film Industry. I am so proud of the young adults they all are! Hanging out with all THREE of them is just the best.

I have a B.A. in English Ed., M.Ed. with a focus in Reading Instruction, and a Doctorate of Arts, with a focus in English Pedagogy/Technology and K-Adult Literacy.  I have been teaching for 26 years in public, private, home-school, tutoring, and college settings.  I am finishing my eighth year teaching here at NorthStar – yay!  I love singing, reading (Anne of Green Gables is my favorite), writing stories, traveling with my family, enjoying coffee or hot tea, and trying new recipes. Hanging out with young people is also one of my favorite things to do! I always say that they are my people! I love Jesus, learning more of who He is in my life, and sharing that hope with those around me.
