Have you considered homeschooling your student, but don’t know where to start? Listen as Audra Laney tells how God showed her that her idea of homeschooling was not at all what she thought it was. She shares her journey and how God has completely reshaped her relationship with him and her children through homeschooling.
Show Notes:
2:32- As it came closer in time for him to go to school, I just realized I didn’t think he was going to fit in the same box with the other kids.
2:51 – God put friends in my life who homeschooled and it kind of softened my heart that maybe homeschooling could be a possibility one day.
3:04 – My mentor that I’ve never met is Sally Clarkson and I started reading her books and listening to her and God just really worked on my heart.
I realized homeschooling didn’t fit into this mold that I thought it would.
4:24 – God has completely reshaped my relationships with my children and relationships with Jesus.
6:08 – I researched and read tons of information when deciding on a curriculum. Some of the different things we used:
- Singapore Math
- Sonlight Literature
- Leap Frog Letter Factory
- Classical Conversations program
7:10 – Eventually we started using a program called Classical Conversations. Which we use now once a week. They are kind of the bones of our curriculum and we add Math, and Language Arts to that.
9:28 – We went to the doctor and he was diagnosed with severe ADHD.
10:00 – There is a stigma around medicating children with ADHD, but I didn’t know what else to do because I saw him struggling so badly. I saw that things were difficult for him.
10:34 – The first day he was on the medication he must have thanked me 20 times.
10:53 – That assured me that we are on the right path.
13:13 – He could possibly have dyslexia.
15:32 – I think that a lot of the reason there is such a stigma around medication is because people don’t understand ADD & ADHD. They think it’s just kids who don’t want to pay attention. But when you realize that it is a chemical imbalance in the brain. That that are actual chemicals that aren’t leveled out correctly and these kids can’t help it.
17:51 – This diagnosis and walking through it with him has taught me that my own strength is never going to be enough and that His strength is sufficient in my weakness and that’s okay.
19:30 – Satan in those moments is so crafty. He will whisper lies. Things that are not true. But in those moments, God has taught me that I have to work on taking those thoughts captive and bringing them before him and saying, “Is this truth?”
2 Corinthians 12: 9 – But he said to me, “My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness.” Therefore, I will boast all the more gladly about my weaknesses, so that Christ’s power may rest on me. – NIV
23:22 – There is one thing I tell my children all the time. “There is nothing you can do that would make me love you more. There is nothing you can do that would make me love you less. And that is the same thing with God. His love for you is constant.”
26:03 – Homeschooling can be taxing. You give and give and it’s important to pour back into yourself some way.
26:32 – I also think it’s important to be with a group of like-minded parents.
- Important to have mom’s that are ahead of you in their journey that you can talk to and get advice from
- Having people that you can go through this journey with
28:09 – February and November are the months that parents want to give up.
29:17 – Where would someone go to find a homeschool community in their area?
Facebook is an amazing tool these days. There are all sorts of mom groups on Facebook.
