On the Front Lines in NYC: A Nurse’s Perspective

May 1, 2020 | Health & Family | 0 comments

Medical professionals have been called heroes during the COVID-19 outbreak, but Madelyn Smith doesn’t see it that way. Madelyn is an ICU nurse from Nashville, TN who was called to serve at one of the hospitals in New York City during this unprecedented time. Listen as she shares her experience and how she has seen God working in her life and the lives of those around her.

Show Notes:

1:42 – How did you know that God was calling you to NYC?

1:52 – Discernment is always the hardest thing to know as a Christian. Are you acting on faith: or are you acting on emotion?

4:49 – When I arrived, New York in the hospital was overwhelming. I have never seen anything like it in my history of nursing.

  • Overcrowding
  • Patients lined against the walls
  • Beds touching

6:38 – There was a ratio of 10-15 patients to 1 nurse on ventilators in the ICU. Usually when you have a patient on a ventilator, you have 2 patients to 1 nurse.

7:00 – They all needed assistance immediately and how do you answer that? Each patient’s need….

7:09 – I faced each patient and each situation with certainty that God was going to lead and he was going to do what was within his will to get us through this.

10:14 – “When we had 4 people recover, that was all God. It was nothing we did on our own. That was completely amazing.”

10:26 – “We are able to be there and hold the hands of those who are dying, pray for them and pray for their families when they are not able to have their families here during this time.”

11:15 – “I feel like God has just put a hedge over me and our entire team. I feel like it is shedding a light on God and his power.”

11:48 – Something that is happening compliments of the Today Show is they are going to make sure medical staff has a hot meal when they leave their hotel room. That is God’s work.

13:58 – There is a lot of fear, unknown, and uncertainty. That is what this world offers. But there is that peace, comfort and salvation that you can have with Jesus and he provides a promise. He gives a promise that this world is never going to give you.

15:02 – For all of those that are missing graduation and feel like things have been taken from them, I hope and pray that they see that there is something so much bigger than graduation or a career, but that they have a relationship with Christ.

15:10 – Above all things, no matter what you do in this life, the most important decision you are ever going to make is going to be where you stand with God.

17:28 – “You’re a homeschool mom. When you go back home and pick back up with them, what are you going to teach your children from what you’ve learned right now about life, people, and God?

  • Love each other
  • Be there for each other
  • Sharing that God is always with us
  • Be servants of the Lord

19:04 – Know that no matter what, God is going to see you through, and where there are dark times, there is always light.

21:40 – “Instead of rushing this time, be grateful for the time we have right now. Soak it up. God has planned a certain walk & plan for you so that you can be a light for others.”
– If you are home and you feel lost or feel like you are not making a difference:

  • Dig in the Word
  • Get Spiritually right
  • Focus on what God is asking you to live for right now

23:45- Protection & Health advice

  • Stop and smell the roses
  • Start an exercise routine
  • Rest in God’s word
  • Be cautious of using a lot of toxic chemicals, use in moderation
  • Use Vitamin C, Vitamin D and Zinc
