NorthStar Academy: A Mom’s Perspective

We are so excited to have three NSA moms on the podcast this week! Listen as we hear from Janelle Johnson, Monica Kepes, and Breanne King. Hear invaluable advice and tips for adjusting to NorthStar and setting students up for success. Be encouraged as they share that when you are at NSA, you are never alone!

Janelle Johnson

I am Janelle Johnson and I live in Danville, PA. My son did NorthStar for 5 years and graduated last year – he is now at Houghton College in NY. We chose NorthStar for Cody as an online Christian School that would prepare him well for college while providing flexibility – NSA exceeded all of our expectations. Cody was very well prepared for college in many ways through his NSA education.

Monica Kepes

The Kepes Family has been at NSA for 6 ½ years.Monica and her husband, Paul have 3 kids-Will, Anna, and Grace. Will and Anna have already graduated and Grace is a sophomore in high school this year. Prior to attending NorthStar the Kepes Family spent 9 years at a traditional, secular, brick and mortar school, but as years passed, they found it to be more and more difficult to live authentically as people of faith in such a closed environment. So, after a lot of prayer (and research), when the kids were 15, 13, and 10, the family voted (unanimously) to change directions and attend NorthStar Academy. And they’ve never looked back! Will is in his 3rd year at St. Norbert College in Business Administration. Anna is in the middle of her “gap year” and will attend Villanova University in the fall. And Grace, as mentioned, is in 10th grade here at NorthStar, just starting to explore all of her options. Everyone agrees: choosing to attend NorthStar was one of the best decisions their family has ever made.

Breanne King

The King Family has served as career missionaries in Japan over the past 16 years. They have 4 children who attended Japanese public school and then international school before deciding to homeschool them full time. In seeking out homeschooling options for high school to truly prepare their kids for life, they came across NorthStar as one of many possible options. They quickly decided NorthStar was THE option for their kids because it was an accredited, Christian school that would allow them the flexibility in scheduling they wanted, offered a variety of electives, and had a biblical worldview emphasis. Baileigh, 18, graduated last year and they feel it fully prepared her for college classes. Shouta (pronounced ‘show-ta’), also 18, is finishing up his senior year and NorthStar has drastically helped improve his English and prepared him for his future. Ryleigh, 14, has started her high school courses and they have really helped her and she is completely motivated to get her work done. Something that never happened with just regular homeschool curriculum taught by mom. Whitleigh, 11, the youngest has yet to start NSA classes as the family has chosen to only take high school classes but have heard many positive things about lower grades. The entire family has really been thankful to have found NorthStar and all that it has done for the kids’ education and spiritual emphasis in their daily lives.
